Clan Altar Of Evil [AoE] and Kevin [Quantum] Presents..

Kevin's guide to, Harness the Strength of a God

Half human, half night elf. Serving the order of the Paladine. Sven is one of the over looked heroes not realizing the power he has to change the tides of a game, being tank or dps, possibly ganker.

1- Hero Over View

Hero Introduction:

Sven is all about getting pumped up. His skills allow him to deal a lot of area of effect damage to several targets at once. Storm Bolt is a powerful damage spell, which stuns both the target and all surrounding units for several seconds, allowing Sven to catch up and deal with them. His Warcry ability helps, giving Sven and nearby allies a temporary movement speed and armor bonus so they can charge quickly and fearlessly. Sven's foes should be especially fearful of his powerful physical attacks. God's Strength pumps Sven's damage up to very high levels, and Cleave turns every attack into an area of effect strike. Although his gameplay is fairly straightforward, Sven should not be underestimated. The best course of action when faced with a fully pumped Sven is to run.

Backround Story:

A follower of the great God of Order, Paladine, Sven has sworn to uphold the rights of all. Born of a Knight and a Night Elf and ostracized since birth, Sven has lead a solitary existence of meditation and training. He has come out of his wanderings determined to guard the innocent against evil. Armed with his blessed cleaving blade Justice, and harnessing the power to strike down his enemies with the might of God's Strength, Sven's wrath toward the unjust is a sight to behold.

Pros:
-AoE Stun
-Built In Splash Dmg
-Great Damage for a Decent amount of time.
-Can Tank, Gank, and Initiate.
-Saves Lives
-Serves a purpose in Team battles and in teams overall.
-Nice attack animation for getting last hits.

Cons:
-I'll be honest, Sven is one of my favored heroes so this is a hard part.
-Under 300 starting movement which is usually average for heroes like Sven.
-Splash doesn't come quick, due to it not being useful early game as his other skills.
-Low mana pool for a Stun that costs 140 mana.
-His great damage is his weakness, causing him to get piled often in team battles. (We will get back to this problem in the Item section)

2- Skills

Storm Bolt:

Notes:

This skill remains the same Mana cost, and Duration, but the Damage Increases this is a nice skill to work on.

Great Cleave:

Notes:

This is a nice skill, not a skill to really get right away in my opinion, but when it's Svens main time to be in the scene he should have this already. We'll get to the timing of this later on.

Warcry:

Notes:

This isn't one of my favorite skills on sven, but! It is better than the old armor aura he had versions ago it also serves the purpose it's made for but it has a con to it, and a pro.

Pro- It gives allies the boosts of it's abilities.

Con- Sven STOPS in order to cast this, MoM is a nice DPS item on Sven. I'll explain the options of this skill as we go through the guide. You'll know what I'm talking about when the time comes.

God Strength:

Notes:

Nothing much to say about this, but THIS my friend. Oh ho! THIS is what makes you GODLIKE. The name of the skill explains itself, skill this whenever possible it's a priority on this hero.

24- WarCry - WARCRY MAXED OUT

25- Stats

Notes:

My reason to max out storm bolt, is because the Damage increases while everything else stays the same, so you need to make the best of this Storm Bolt.

Stats is a nice thing to support the Storm Bolt, early ganking is nice to have a dependant Sven. Warcry is more replaced by the Mask of Madness build which you will see later being the DPS build I use, which is why I made it optional to get the point when necessary if you plan to get it.

Cleave is really decent when you are keeping lanes from getting to towers, bunched up creeps etc. Helps clear them quick and get back to the game and also helps when you are in team battles the cleave is noticeable.

-

Storm Bolt:

Storm Bolt, is a good stun. It does nearly the same as some other heroes stuns but this has an AoE. This means you have to make the best of an AoE spell (AoE = Area Of Effect meaning the stun doesn't strike single target but a specific Area.) When you launch Svens Storm Bolt it will fly in the air and chase the target down if he runs or even TP's! So once you launch it remember to just commence whatever your team has planned out. Usually you'll try to catch two heroes in the stun.

Great Cleave:

Great Cleave as I stated earlier, it's a good spell for farming when you need it. But it doesn't require rushing plus it won't give you the huge 50 splash on the first point, so level it as the game goes use it to clear creep pushed lanes where the creeps are bunched up, carry a TP then TP back with your team and proceed as you were doing. Also even then! The cleave will come in handy as you get in team battles you might kill a guy you aren't even targeting with the splash.

WarCry:

WarCry is not one of my favorite Sven skills, but it does serve a purpose like chasing, or if you are trying to be support you stop when you cast it and your ally possibly another carry hero or someone who needs the kill can make use of your help and catch up to the chase and kill the target. When I play Sven I use it more of a support skill than a self usage skill. Afterall it does effect the whole team for a reason.

God's Strength:

This, is basically your pillars holding up everything. Your other skills will synergize with this pretty well. A common mistake made with this is being casted TOO SOON! 30 seconds does seem like alot, but you have to think you might have to chase etc so I'd try and cast this more with a Storm bolt initiation, meaning you cast the God's Strength when you are Ready to initiate, not when you are heading to initiate. Storm bolt while god strengthed and do work.

4- Item Choices

Starting Items:

Gold (We're looking at a Pick and CM Game here 5v5)

Total 603:

Bottle (Mana and HP Healing Item) 3/3 Charges heals 130 HP and 70 Mana per hit DO NOT SPAM ONE AFTER ANOTHER THERE IS A DELAY FOR MANA AND HP TO HEAL (3 Seconds): 600 Gold

End: 3 gold > Go to lane.
http://www.playdota.com/items - For the Items information go to this link then Ancient of Wonders.

Note: I usually start with a bottle if I am going to be needing Storm Bolts ( A combo lane example: Sven and Lina combo up pretty well when Sven Storm Bolts, Lina Stuns while you run in, and melee hit. Lina should then finish off with a Phoenix etc this combo works by level 3 usually)

Second Option:

Starting Gold: 603

Items:

Magic Stick (Possible to upgrade to Magic Wand for 150 Gold the stick itself is 200 gold)

Gold Left:

403/250.

403 gold option:

Tangoes
Clarity
Gauntlet of Strength

= 390

Gold Left: 13.

If you have 250 gold, buy Tangoes and a Gauntlet of Strength.

Notes:

Tangoes are nice to carve out escape holes, gank holes, or just get a little touch of HP when you don't want to use your wand stick.

-------

Touch Up Items / Early Game Items:

Touch up items to me are let's say Items you just want for early game assistance and Survivability, early farmed items.

Usually this will consist of Wraith bands, Null Talismans, Bracers it varys for different heroes.

In this case Sven requires Boots of Speed, 2x (Two) Bracers as touch up items. Once you have these you start getting the fun items, all comes in time NEVER! Rush boots etc you wanna stay in a lane as long as possible with self healing items believe me, in the long run you will get your items alot quicker with the healing items.

Notes:

The above items can be looked at here:

http://www.playdota.com/items

Boots Of Speed: Cache of Quel-Thalan (500 gold cost)
Bracers Require: 1 Gauntlet of Strength, and One Circlet of Nobility. Both of these can be Aquired at Sena the Accesorizor. You will then need the Bracer Recipe located at GateWay Relics costing 175 gold. The total per Bracer is (420 gold) if you begin to make a bracer by pieces of reccommend the Circlets due to the Circlet giving 2+ to all stats while Gauntlets just give +3 Strength.

NEVER get a recipe before you have the items FOR the recipe, because a recipe does nothing until it is formed.

You should be looking at Boots, a Bottle with Two Bracers by 10 minutes into the game.

-------

Builds:

Alright, now you should be looking at builds. You should have your mutual nessecity Items being once again Boots of Speed, 2x (Two) Bracers, and a Bottle.

(If you haven't Noticed I went with my Standard Bottle build as an Example for this guide)

Ganker / DPS Build:

You will need Speed, DPS, Timeing.

For this build you will require:

Boots of Speed>Power Treads - Mid Game
Mask of Madness - Mid Game
Armlet of Mordiggan - Late Game

to begin this you should turn your Boots of Speed into Power Treads by Purchasing Gloves of Haste, and Belt of Giant Strength which will automatically make the boots, make sure they are set to Strength (Red boots) incase you accidently click them. Then buy Gloves of Haste (An extra pair which we will turn into Armlet later) then make a Mask of Madness, starting with the Mask of Death then buying the Mask of Madness Recipe which then the item should build itself.

Notes:

Power Treads give Speed, and Strength which is good for Sven.
Armlet will later on add onto your damage immensly and give you more speed but watch out this is a Intermidiate rated build because the Armlet absorbs your HP as you have it Activated (Click to Activate the Gauntlet it's appearance will change) .

All this should be completed in order

Power Treads
Gloves of Haste
Mask of Death>Mask of Madness
Armlet from Gloves of Haste.

Though it seems your items are coming in slow the build itself will pace with the game. It is up to you to keep up with the times and maintain a steady pace, practice with this will help you get on time with the hero.

http://www.playdota.com/items Check here to see where you purchase the items.

Power Treads = Boots of Speed (500 gold), Gloves of Haste (500 gold), Belt of Giant Strength (450 gold).

Locations: Cache of Quel-Thalan, Sena the Accesorizor.

Mask of Madness = Mask of Death (900 gold), Mask of Madness Recipe (1,000 gold).

Locations: Cache of Quel-Thalan, Enchanted Artifacts.

Armlet of Mordiggan = Helmet of Iron Will (950 gold), Gloves of Haste ( 500 gold), Blades of Attack (500 gold), Armlet of Mordiggan Recipe ( 900 gold).

Locations: Weapon Dealer, Cache of Quel-Thalan, Weapon Dealer, Ancient Weaponry.

There you have it, as you pace yourself sooner things will happen quicker on Average I aqquire all the DPS build at about 30 minutes and the game ends at 40 - 50 minutes. To use this build you basically Cast your ultimate when you are ready to initiate, activate your armlet cast stun and then click your Mask of Madness then proceed to going UNSTOPPABLE, GODLIKE, RRAAMMPAGGEEE. Remember to De-Activate Armlet when you aren't using it, if you are running and are at low hp and are about to get attacked you can activate Armlet for the Extra Strength meaning more HP. This is useful especially if you need just enough life to turn around cast a stun then run away.

This is usually the build I go with, meaning I replace my WarCry with Mask of Madness. It also works well for taking down towers, rax, enemies, creeps etc.

Tank / Support Build:

Alright now this build starts the same as the DPS because you always want to have those things for Sven, but you get into the item build of what you want to go after. In this case we're going Tank / Support.

Boots of Speed>Power Treads
2x Bracer
Bottle
Black King Bar (BkB) - Mid to Late Game
Hood of Defiance (HoD/Hood) - Mid to Late Game
-
Kelens Dagger (Blink Dagger)
Assault Cuirass

Usually you will aim to have power treads at the same timing as before, but these other two items are slightly more spaced out gold wise, I'd go for the Hood first then the BkB but it's optional between what you alternate. Blink and Assault Cuirass are just fun items, blink helps initiate. It can be purchased in the DPS build aswell.

Boots of Speed> Power Treads
PlanesWalker's Cloak> Hood of Defiance
Ogre Axe>Black King Bar

Notes: I spaced out some times because this is gradually the pace you'd set if it's your first time trying to make the build it might be slower. But as I stated before you will gradually speed up as you learn to last hit creeps more etc. This is also the build you would go WarCry because it gives armor and the chase speed you won't be getting MoM in this line up of items.

Power Treads = Boots of Speed (500 gold), Gloves of Haste (500 gold), Belt of Giant Strength (450 gold).

Locations: Cache of Quel-Thalan, Sena the Accesorizor.

Hood of Defiance = 2x (Two) Ring(s) of Regeneration (1 = 350 / 2 = 700 gold), PlanesWalkers Cloak (400 gold), Helmet of Ironwill (950 gold).

Locations: Cache of Quel-Thalan, Cache of Quel-Thalan, Weapons Dealer.
Notes on Hood: You can also get a Ring of Health from Secret Shop in the Forest for 875 gold and the Hood itself can be later turned into Khadgars Pipe if your team really needs you to push the defense for everyone.

Black King Bar = Ogre Axe (1,000 gold), Mithril Hammer (1,600 gold), Recipe (1,300 gold)

Locations: Sena the Accesorizor, Weapons Dealer, Protectorate

Any questions of Where or what an item looks like please go here, just check out where the shop name and you should find the items as placed above.

http://www.playdota.com/items

Build Notes:

In this build, you try to initiate in team battles, you are set to take some damage, use your ultimate activate BkB and initiate. BkB turns you into Avatar mode meaning spells cannot hit you it's a useful item if you are the one initiating and the one that is supposed to take the damage. BkB can possibly buy you 10 more seconds guaranteed from your ultimate which is 1/3rd it is alot of time in the spurr of the moment, hood gives you 30 percent magic defense which also reduces some damage from spells, you being the first one in should be hit by alot of stuff this allows you to take it and let your team do work to clean up the scraps. You might not expirience as much GODLIKE but! You will be glorified during the game for helping lots, maybe evening winning the game for your team.

5- Photo Explanation

Storm Bolt:

This is Storm Bolts AoE ( Area of Effect) the middle part is used to target and anything in the area of the target will be stunned aswell.

Storm Bolt Abuse:

Red: The Red range is Storm Bolts range, that is how far you can launch it at most.

Blue: The Blue range is the reccomended range, this gives you the chance to catch up if they run into Red range and still hit them. If you also manage to Launch your Storm Bolt at Blue range, it will follow if they keep running, so don't! Stop cast animation thinking it won't fly at them sometimes that 2 Second stun is a value in chase.

Notes:

Abuse of the AoE and chase power this Skill has, AoE is always helpful in team battles/clashes. This is also nice for chasing it lets you have time to catch up and save allies with it's range.

Ganking:

When Sven is on Sentinel, it's nice to put him in the Bottom lane or Top. When Sven is on the Scourge he is nice to put on Top or Bottom. Sentinel bottom is Defensive ganking, top is Offensive. For Scourge side, Bottom is offensive, and Top is Defensive.

Note: Ganking always has a offensive purpose ;p

Sentinel Defensive Example:

Red: Red is the Scourge pushing into the bottom tower.

Blue: The Blue bottom one is your Ally, the Light Blue with an Inner Dark Blue circle on the left would be Sven. Sven in this case if possible would cast Ultimate then Mask of Madness run in with the stun and have about 5 seconds to use mask of madness which is two hits when you would land one or maybe none. Your ally comes in after your stun if it's a nice combo your ally will have a stun and cast it right after yours it would be a combo and guaranteed kill most of the time. Especially early game (Level 3 or so).

Notes: In ganks, you would usually try to pull things like this or something along these lines, communication and timeing is a great thing with your ally.
